Croatia & Slovenia – 2018

This week-long itinerary covers the highlights with the perfect amount of leisure time for independent exploration.

The first two nights, on the island of Pag, you’d enjoy the serenity of a romantic, family-owned hotel with a gourmet restaurant and well-regarded winery, set in peaceful gardens. Opatija is a coastal resort, dotted with belle-époque villas from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. And we conclude with two nights in Ljubljana, the picturesque, pedestrian-friendly capital of Slovenia.

Along the way, we stroll through Plitvice National Park, hunt for truffles in Motovun, explore Venetian-like Rovinj, tour the jaw-dropping Postojna Cave system and visit picturesque Lake Bled.

Highlights

Island of Pag

  • We departed from our meeting point in Split, to Zadar, a historical Dalmatian town with a modern new highlight: the Sea Organ.
  • Had some free time in Zadar and then an hour’s drive north to the island of Pag where stayed for two nights at the Boskinac Hotel & Winery, featured in Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations.”
  • The next day, we visit an ancient olive grove on the northern-most part of the island, for an olive oil tasting and guided tour of the estate.

Opatija

  • Enjoyed a leisurely walking tour around the seaside promenade, main park and old Austrian villas of this pleasant resort town – a favorite of European royalty from 170 years ago.
  • During our full-day excursion to Croatia’s “Tuscany,” we discovered 6th-century basilicas to visit, mosaics to marvel over, cobblestone streets to scamper and truffles to hunt!

Ljubljana

  • We head further north into Slovenia, where we explored that Postojna caves and made a photo stop of Predjama Castle.
  • We arrived in Ljubljana late this afternoon and checked into Hotel Cubo for the next two nights.
  • Later that evening, the WOWees got a surprise.
