Most flights arrive in the early morning hours. You’ll be greeted at the airport and transferred to your hotel where your room will be waiting for immediate check-in at the beautiful Country Club Hotel. You’ll have a chance to rest-up and get settled. We’ll gather in the hotel, then head out to Larco Museum for an overview of Peruvian history, followed by lunch on the beautiful grounds. After lunch we’ll enjoy a short walking tour of the historic city center. We will return to the hotel for a brief rest, then off to dinner to celebrate the beginning of our Peruvian adventure!

Today is all about Peruvian culture: we’ll visit with local artisans who relocated from the mountain regions to Lima, followed by a visit to a gorgeous rancho where Peruvian Paso horses are raised. We’ll see these gorgeous animals showing off their unique gaits and festive tack. Lunch will be a feast of real Peruvian fare! The historic city of Barranco will be where we’ll walk off our lunch – stroll around at your leisure and maybe grab an ice cream or cold cerveza. Tonight we’ll enjoy a sampling tapas dinner on a rooftop, serenaded by local musicians, then head “home” after a full day.

Today we’re headed to the scenic and spiritual Sacred Valley – the gateway to Machu Picchu, but beautiful in its own right. We’ll fly from Lima to Cusco, then travel by coach for a scenic drive to Urubamba; meeting some llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas (oh my!) along the way. Oh, and maybe do a little shopping, too. Our hotel, the Hacienda Urubamba is an oasis unto itself. We’ll learn about Pachamanca – a traditional form of cooking in the earth, get a bit of education about the stars, then meet up and enjoy a lovely dinner together.

Today is one of cultural immersion – we’ll head to the village of Chuquibamba – doesn’t get more immersive than this! The morning begins with a pre-Inca ceremony lead by a shaman of the village, starting our day with gratitude as we “thank mother earth for all the gifts she offers us”. We will mingle with the locals and learn from the artisans about their wares: cooking, weaving, ceramics, and medicinal herbs. We’ll enjoy lunch in this beautiful village. Heading back to our hotel in the late afternoon with hearts full of joy! Dinner will be on our own at the hotel or we can arrange transportation into town (soles will be provided).

Hacienda Urubamba
Today’s the day to check this one off your bucket list – Machu Picchu! We’ll be traveling aboard the Inca Rail First Class train (lunch included) – with panoramic windows offering you unbelievable views. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, we meet with our guide and begin the hike to the 15th century Inca citadel – a magical place that has drawn curious travelers for decades. We’ll have three hours to explore Machu Picchu, then return to our hotel, the beautiful Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, to relax and get ready for dinner together at the hotel.

The morning is yours to do as you wish: a second visit to Machu Picchu (at an additional cost), guided tour of the extensive grounds of the hotel – including bird watching (no charge), a pampering spa session (at an additional cost), wander around the cute town of Aguas Calientes, or relax and enjoy this beautiful property. Today we’ll explore Cusco – the former capital of the Incan empire – via a guided walking tour. We’ll stroll the streets of this UNESCO World Heritage site as we learn about Cusco’s complex history. We will perform a farewell Cusquenian ceremony thanking the local spirits/gods for allowing us to visit and enjoy their land. You’ll be provided with Peruvian soles (dollars) to use for lunch on your own and some wonderful suggestions of where to dine, followed by the afternoon to explore independently. We’ll regroup for a special farewell dinner to say an official “adios” to this beautiful South American country.

Tips and Taxes:

Baggage:

Passport/Visa:
You must have a valid passport with at least 6 months validity from the date of re-entry to your home country. US citizens do not presently require a visa to enter Peru.
Health / Vaccinations:
We are constantly monitoring requirements for travel to Peru and will advise if COVID requirements change. As of May 31, 2022, to enter Peru you will be required to show proof of vaccination for Covid-19; no testing is required. As of June 12, 2022, you are no longer required to provide a negative COVID test to return to the United States. You may wish to consult your physician for recommendations. What will the weather be like?
The best time to visit Peru is in their dry season: May-September. In Lima the average low temperature is expected to be 60° and the average high of 68°. In the Sacred Valley and at Machu Picchu you can expect highs of approximately 66-68° and a low of 34°. Cusco temperatures will be similar to those of the Sacred Valley.
What should I wear?
When in Peru our advice would be to dress in a casual, low key fashion – comfort is key. Just as we suggest for most of our destinations, dress in layers. Be prepared for cold nights in the upper elevations. Be absolutely certain to pack your comfortable, broken-in walking shoes for the trek to Machu Picchu.
Do I need to get any vaccinations?
Nothing specific is required, but you should be up-to-date with all routine vaccinations. Consult the Center for Disease Control website for current recommendations: For travel to Peru. Check with your physician at least 30-60 days prior to travel.
Are there any special precautions for COVID-19?
Currently, there are no COVID-related travel restrictions when entering Peru from the United States or when returning to the United States from Peru.
What about airfare?
International airfare is not included in the package. We can assist with reservations for a service fee of $75 per person. (Service fee is waived for WOW! Travel Club alumni.)
Will I need an adapter to plug in my appliances and chargers?
For Peru there are three associated plug types, A, B and C. Plug type A is the plug which has two flat parallel pins, plug type B has two flat parallel pins and a grounding pin and type C has two round pins. Peru operates on a 220V supply voltage and 60Hz. Please note: even with an adapter, a US hairdryer should not be used. All hotels will have hairdryers available.
Can I use my cell phone in Peru?
With most providers, it’s best to activate an international data and telephone plan. We suggest that you contact your carrier to discuss potential costs for data and voice communications.
What is the currency?
The official currency of Peru is the Sol (S/). Banknotes have denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100 or 200 soles. Coins come in values of 1, 2 and 5 soles, as well as 10, 20 and 50 cents. Currently (June 2022), the exchange rate is 3.75 sol for every US Dollar. For reference, a bottle of beer at a cafe is 7.50 S/ or $1.99. A great way to figure out prices while you travel is to install an exchange app on your phone – we recommend My Currency Converter (it’s free to install).
In addition to using your credit cards (many merchants do not accept Amex), US dollars are accepted in many stores, restaurants, hotels and service stations. Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks or exchange offices. ATMs are available but generally charge a higher exchange rate.
What about travel insurance?
